Mostly known as Praça da República garden's, its true name is Teófilo
Braga garden. Take a peek at the garden of one of Porto's most emblematic squares.
This week on Naturspaces, NaturPorto takes you to Praça da República, to the Teófilo Braga garden, generally known as Praça da República garden's. Its creation is aknowledged to Jerónimo Montteiro da Costa, a man responsible for numerous spaces in the city as Praça Carlos Alberto, the Arca d'Água gardens' or Praça da República or even Praça Mouzinho de Albuquerque (or rotunda da Boavista).
The garden exists since the beggining of the twentieth century, around 1915. Before that, Praça da República had almost one century full with history, with events like the gathering of the liberal troops during the 1820's liberal revolution and the gathering of republican troops for the january, 31st 1891 republic revolution. This occurence was the reason republicans called it "Praça da República" in 1910.
You can see american oaks and linden trees, as well as other plants less common on Portuguese territory. Roses, camellias can also be spotted on the flowerbeds that encircle the palm trees. This time of the year, the garden is filled with several shades of purple.

At this garden you can also find some statues placed throughout the years. The oldest of them all is Baco, made by Teixeira Lopes to celebrate the sixth year of Implantação da República.
