Of course when we think of a cemetery, the first thing that comes up to our minds is death. But what Porto's cemeteries show is actually the circle of life itself, with some of the most stupendous fauna and flora in the city.
Dating from 1839, Prado do Repouso cemetery was the first ever public cemetery in Porto. Located in Campanhã, in the east side of the city, it is home of some of the main figures in Portuguese arts history, like Eugénio d'Andrade (poet), António Cruz (painter), Aurélio de Paz dos Reis (cinematographer) and Abel Salazar (plastic artist and doctor).
Cemeteries' popularity has been increasing these last years, mainly because of sculptures, present architecture styles and, of course, its natural beauty. The neo-Gothic style, granite structures and monumental chapels get the attention of anyone who passes by.
Flora has its own show in this cemetery. Prado do Repouso cemetery offers a fantastic diversity of trees and flowers. Here you can find camellias, tulips, magnolias or even cypresses.
These colorful and vivid scenes give life to a place where the dead rest and the living remember their memory for all eternity.
Life always finds a way.
