The Lesser Black-backed Gull and the Yellow-legged Gull: the waterfowl of Parque da Cidade
By Unknown - março 15, 2018
Parque da Cidade, located in the northwest of Porto, is one of the best places for birdwatching, specially when it comes to seagulls.
About 14 species can be found along the four lakes that constitute the park. However, the most common birds are the Lesser Black-backed Gull and the Yellow-legged Gull, present in abundance in the first lake of the park, due to its contact with the sea.
The Lesser Black-backed Gull, scientifically known as Larus Fuscus, can be found all year round, but mostly in winter. They are characterized by their dark gray back, typical of seagulls, pale yellow paws and yellow beak, with a red or black coloring.

The Yellow-legged Gull, also known scientifically as Larus Michahellis, has silver back and wings, with tips in different shades of black and pearl. An interesting fact is that the seagulls of the 1st year of this species are very similar to the Lesser Black-backed seagulls, while the seagulls of the 2nd and 3rd year are easily distinguishable due to the silverback.
For those who want to observe a large community of seagulls, it is recommended to visit Parque da Cidade until the third week of March, when winter officially ends. Other places where the species can be observed are beaches and Douro estuary, at Porto.
