Gracious tulips in Porto

Tulips came a long way from the old Ottoman Empire to the Netherlands, but you can also expect them in Porto.

Tulips are flowers that can give life to any house, to any place at all. Its vibrant and varied colors get the attention of everyone. It's difficult to walk ny without noticing them.

With more than a hundred species and leaves of many shapes - like oval or pointy -, this flower is mostly cultivated in the Netherlands. Story time: these plants were taken to Holland by the Dutch, when meeting with the Turks (Ottoman Empire), around the 16th century. Since then, this northern country has taken a lot of advantage.

This plant got so popular in the Netherlands that it was even used as currency at a point. As its value would rise, stealing this kind of plant bulbs turned out to be very frequent during the Dutch Golden Era - maritime discoveries season, just like Portugal the century before. Its importance to the economy was undeniable, being the reason behind the "Tulip Mania" phenomenon.

Nowadays, this flower is still and important symbol of the Netherlands. Complete fields covered by tulips, motivating festivals like the Tulip Festival in Noordoostpolder. Every year, Holland offers a giant stock of tulips to Canada, as a thank you gesture for their help during the II World War.

It's various colors have a very specific meaning. While the red ones can mean love, passion, eternity, the white can mean forgiveness. In this case, the yellow ones should be friendship, light and prosperity.
