Peony: a flower of diversified beauties

Originally found in Asia, Southern Europe and Western North America, the Peony is a flowering plant that has about eighty species within the genus Paeonia.
The Peony flowers appear in early spring being characterized by the light scent they carry and their colors ranging from white, pink, red and violet which in some cases have dark spots at the base of the petals. In addition they can be classified as simple, semi-folded and folded.

In China it is commonly used ornamentally and is national symbol of that same country. But the Peony is not only a flower full of beauty that is used in decoration and bouquets, its leaves and roots can have medicinal functions in the treatment of fever, pains, treatment of wounds, among others.

For the cultivation of the Peony it requires soils rich in organic matter and plenty of natural light, being cultivated on half-shade in warmer temperatures. The Peony after the correct planting needs time to develop producing only a single flower in its first year of life. However after adapted and established it doesn't require much maintenance being able to survive rigorous winters, and the tendency is that each year it flourishes more, being able to attain a longevity that varies between 25 and 50 years.
